Pros & Cons

  • Great work-life balance and workplace culture. Exposure to projects and day-to-day problem-solving.
  • Great level of support. Fantastic team of people to work with.
  • A large, interconnected network of people over different disciplines with ranging expertise that can help.
  • I love being able to work in the minerals industry without having to go FIFO as the refineries and mines are within driving distance from home. Being an international company, I may have future opportunities to travel abroad for work. The graduate program itself offers a lot of opportunities for both personal and professional development. This is captured in monthly graduate days, extra training courses as well as responsibilities given to me in my everyday work. On top of this, Alcoa is very diligent in making sure you have a job after the graduate program is complete, securing my future career.
  • It is relaxed compared to consultancy, training events are provided.
  • The low turnover of employees can be both good and bad. On one hand you have years of experience to tap into, but on the other hand, it can make it difficult to change strategies and methods of work.
  • Change seems difficult due to the systems in place or long-standing practises.
  • The ageing demographic. A lot of workers have been here for over 20 (often 30 or 40) years. This means that not only do I have to work consistently with people of an older generation, but trying to change the culture in areas that require it becomes quite difficult.
  • Lack of on the job training.
  • The old unionist and pessimistic mentality of some of the workers. It really is a great place to work, so the negativity is frustrating at times.

The company seems very willing to promote and progress in my career after finishing the graduate program.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Significant environmental work, and a lot of community involvement and fundraising.

Culture
7.8
Culture
There is very much a union vs staff mentality which can be frustrating. Apart from that everyone is very friendly and open to having a laugh without being 100% serious at all times, which is conducive to a fun and friendly place to work. The hierarchy is well organised and the chain of communication upwards is obvious.

Diversity

Diversity
There is quite a gap in gender diversity on the site, but at the more technical level things seem to be much more even. In terms of retention, it is almost too good! The average age of the operators on site is much higher than I thought which is a testament to how good they have it.

Satisfaction
Currently, a lot of my work is done in order to familiarise myself with the process I'm in charge of. I am responsible for a wide range of reporting duties on performance and inventory. I spend a fair amount of time troubleshooting issues and a bit of time of process improvements. As I learn more about the process my focus will primarily be on process improvement.

Recruitment

Recruitment
The process is quite simple. Apply directly to the company, go for an interview, do psychometric testing, do a medical and then you're hired. I was asked to give examples about demonstrating things like teamwork, safety, how my values align with the company etc. I was also asked what my career goals/aspirations are and where I saw myself in 5-10 years time. Alcoa doesn't ask technical questions, so don't stress about that. Instead, focus on making sure you can use the STAR method to give practical examples of you demonstrating the company values and the core behaviours that companies typically look for eg. teamwork

Salary
The pay is okay now, but it increases significantly each year of the grad program, I was paid significantly less to do significantly more as a contractor managing a field section of a company. I have been told that the bonuses used to be significantly higher. Generous super, 14%. I am not aware of anything other than that
